Artixa Gallery has been selected to participate in the 10th edition of the PhotoBrussels Festival, where it will present a series of mixed-media photographic works that underscore its commitment to artistic practices on paper, while also showcasing contemporary work for the first time.
Chronique d’un Tarot Photographique is a deeply personal contemporary photographic reinterpretation of the Tarot of Marseille by French artist Stéphane Fedorowsky. Inspired by a promise made nearly thirty years ago to his great-uncle, a tarot practitioner, the exhibition blends personal memory, symbolism, craftsmanship, and technology in a completely unprecedented way.
The exhibition brings together the full set of tarot arcana, reimagined as mixed-media works. Each of the 22 major arcana and the first 16 minor arcana takes the form of a cinematic tableau: first conceived as a fantastical scene, it is then photographed with real models, costumes, and sets. The fine art paper prints are then hand-painted and embellished with gold leaf, giving each piece a mystical and iconic presence. A group of 40 minor arcana—Cups, Swords, Coins, and Wands—completes this ambitious series.
The exhibition also offers an interactive immersion thanks to Artixa.ai, a multimodal artificial intelligence tool designed for the interpretation of artworks. By scanning selected pieces, visitors access in-depth analyses: symbolism, history, artistic influences, and correspondences between the cards. Artixa.ai creates a new kind of dialogue between the esoteric heritage of the tarot and contemporary technologies.
In resonance with the photographic series, the exhibition will also present, for the first time, a video installation retracing the genesis of the project. Created in collaboration with film and sound artists, this artistic work evokes the evolution of a singular journey: from its discovery in adolescence to its reinterpretation thirty years later through photography, mixed media, and an AI-enhanced reading of the tarot.
“This project was born on the night of my seventeenth birthday, during a tarot reading with my great-uncle,” says Stéphane Fedorowsky. “Today, nearly thirty years later, I am proud to bring it to life in the form of a photographic series, a making-of film, and an AI conceived as a guide.”
